Honors Evolutionary Biology

Taught by Tessa Andrews

How does your course utilize writing as a mode of learning to cover course topics?

Students choose a research question in evolutionary biology and complete two writing assignments related to that question over the course of the semester. This allows them to dive deeper into a topic that interests them. They have to work to understand modern research methodologies and recognize the connections between different studies.

How does your course support writing as a process?

Writing projects occur in stages and include feedback and revision. Students have to plan their writing with an outline or pitch proposal. They engage in constructive peer review and receive feedback from their writing coach. They make a revision plan, and the majority of the grade is for a substantially revised second draft.

What is one writing assignment in the course you are particularly excited about?

I love the connections between assignments in this class.  Students choose a research question in evolutionary biology and write research synthesis of a few peer-reviewed papers. This challenges them to really understand the research methods and results. Then they write blog-style essay for the general public about the same research question, forcing them to focus on the relevance of the research.

What is one writing convention specific to your discipline that students need to know to write effectively in your class?

Students have to learn to make an organized argument. I focus on students learning to write paragraphs that each make a distinct point with a clear topic sentence. I also encourage students to use short sentences, active voice, and headers to guide readers.

Why is writing critical to this course?

Students in the sciences often have not had many opportunities to write outside of lab reports, yet scientists spend a lot of time writing. Students in the sciences are also expected to analyze and interpret results and to use evidence to build arguments. These are thinking skills that can be strengthened by writing!
